Carp Ascending the Current
Carp Ascending the Current
“Carp Ascending the Current”
This sculpture depicts a carp rising through an invisible current, captured at the moment of upward motion. The form is constructed from stainless steel wire using a spatial framework technique, with every intersection hand-welded for structural precision. The height of the work is 144 cm.
CONCEPT
In Eastern symbolism, the carp swimming against the current represents perseverance, resilience, and transformation. It is traditionally associated with the myth of becoming a dragon — a metaphor for ultimate evolution and spiritual ascent.
Here, the transformation is suspended in time — the carp is no longer bound to water, yet has not fully become something else. It exists in the threshold between states.
FORM & MATERIAL
The linear steel structure eliminates weight and solidity, transforming the figure into a flowing system of lines. The composition creates a sense of motion through space rather than physical mass.
The base suggests the movement of water, from which the carp emerges, reinforcing the idea of struggle and ascent.
IMPRESSION
The work exists in a moment of transition:
between water and air
between resistance and transcendence
between struggle and transformation
It is not a depiction of a fish, but a visual embodiment of upward movement as a philosophical state.
